LIBRARY

LIBRARY DEPARTMENT.

I welcome you all to Gombe high school library where students and staff have access to a variety of resources for academic and general knowledge development. On a whole a library is a source of support and relaxation for library users (students, researchers and academia).

Purpose of a library.

To help every member of the school community that is both students and staff gain new knowledge, skills and dispositions for learning and personal development that they will use throughout their lives. The school library supports literacy and reading. It is a place for learning and thinking. It plays a key role in supporting and developing literacy and the enjoyment of reading.

At St. Andrew Kaggwa Gombe high school, we are proud of a modern library with two sections, that is;

  1. Online library

This is popularized as the e-library which facilities e-learning. The Gombe high e-library is more willing to adopt innovations in technology providing students and staff with improvements in electronic and audio books notwithstanding the new forms of communication such as wikis and blogs.  This e-library reduces on the cost of staffing, book maintenance and additional books to the library as it embraces digital cataloguing input to allow users locate and retrieve material. To the student, it prepares them for research and future academic learning  especially at higher institutions. It also boosts their computer skills as they are accessing online reading materials on top of the routine computer sessions.

  1. Physical library.

This is what is very popular among many people. The hard cover or physical books where a student physically accesses the reading material he/she wants to read.

We have a number of shelves full of books for specific subjects arranged according to the latest method.

There are (1017) books for all core subjects like mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, business, humanities and languages in the shelves and well-arranged hence written by the master-minds of the past. There is a card for every book and books are arranged according to their accession numbers. Our library is spacious, well furnished with long tables and chairs where by one table can accommodate ten students. The library staff is professional and welcomes all users in and provides a safe environment for them to be. This is true of both the physical and virtual library environment.

Usage

Students use the library at specific periods to carry out some revision.  Classes like S.1 and S.2 are given one library period per week since they don’t have options. So they study the books meant for their class with the help of dictionaries and acquire the culture of self-help and also read journals, magazines, newspapers and other information materials. Students usually consult the librarian for assistance in locating books, authors and other references to read.

In order to use the reading material outside the library, students use identification card. This enables them use the book/ journal for a maximum of two days. This creates ample time for our users to read broadly and widen knowledge. The school library is under the charge of a trained librarian with Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science of Makerere University, Kampala.

"A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life."
